🌿 Sarah P. Duke Gardens (Durham)


Best months: March–May, September–October

Best for: Romantic, elegant proposals


A classic for a reason, Sarah P. Duke Gardens is stunning year-round, but it truly comes alive in spring with cherry blossoms, tulips, and fresh greenery. Fall brings warm tones and fewer crowds, creating a quieter, more intimate feel

Avoid: Midday weekends in peak spring (very busy)

A permit is required for any portrait or special occasion photography, including proposals and engagements. Permit fees are $100–$150 on weekdays and $150–$200 on weekends depending on time of day. Applications must be submitted at least 30 days in advance.

🌸 JC Raulston Arboretum (Raleigh)


Best months: March–June, September

Best for: Nature-loving couples who want something peaceful and understated


This arboretum offers seasonal variety, with early spring blooms and lush summer greenery. Because it’s smaller and more intimate than Duke Gardens, it works beautifully even outside peak bloom times.

Bonus: Beautiful textures even when flowers aren’t at peak
















🌆 Dorothea Dix Park (Raleigh)


Best months: April–June, September–October

Best for: Sunset proposals, relaxed strolls that turn into big moments

Wide open spaces, skyline views, and gorgeous sunsets make Dorothea Dix Park a favorite. Spring and fall offer comfortable temperatures and vibrant skies without summer heat.

Tip: Golden hour here is unbeatable


🌊 American Tobacco Campus (Durham)


Best months: Year-round (especially March–May & October–December)

Best for: Urban romance, evening proposals, modern love stories

One of the most versatile proposal spots, American Tobacco Campus shines in every season. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather, while winter proposals benefit from

string lights and cozy evening ambiance.

Bonus: Easy celebration plans with nearby restaurants and bars

















🌿 WRAL Azalea Gardens (Raleigh)


Best months: April–May

Best for: Spring proposals with colorful florals


This garden is most famous for its spring azalea blooms, which create vibrant color and a classic garden feel. Outside of bloom season, it’s quieter but less visually impactful.

Timing matters: Peak bloom is short but stunning

Best months: Year-round (especially September–November)

Best for: Creative, art-loving couples who want something unexpected


The NCMA's outdoor park is one of Raleigh's most quietly dramatic backdrops — a sweeping mix of open meadows, large-scale sculptures, reflective water features,

and winding oak-lined paths. The pond in front of the glass-faced museum building creates stunning reflections at golden hour, and the wildflowers that bloom in summer

add an effortless, painterly quality. It's versatile enough to feel intimate or grand depending on where you go.

Tip: The park stays open even after the museum closes — great for a quieter late-afternoon proposal
