Best Locations & Best Time of Year

Family photos are not about perfection — they’re about connection. The quiet in-between moments, the way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter that unfolds when you stop trying to “pose.”

As a family photographer serving Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, I photograph families in a documentary, photojournalistic style, choosing locations that allow children to move freely and families to simply be together. Below is a guide to the best outdoor locations for family photo sessions in the Triangle, grouped by session type, along with the best times of year for each.

Best Locations for Family Photos

One of the biggest questions I get is: “Where should we take our photos?”

Fall & Spring Family Session

Spring and fall are two of the most beautiful seasons for photos in the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill area. The locations are often the same—it just depends on whether you’re drawn to blooms and fresh greens or warm tones and fall colors.

Here’s a simple guide to help you choose what feels right for your session:

Locations I recommend:

🌸 Gardens

    • Sarah P. Duke Gardens (Durham)

    • WRAL Azalea Garden (Raleigh)

    • JC Raulston Arboretum (Raleigh)

   • North Carolina Botanical Garden (Chapel Hill)

🌿 Open Fields & Parks

    •   Dorothea Dix Park (Raleigh)

• William B. Umstead State Park (Raleigh)

• Eno River State Park (Durham)

• Local parks around Chapel Hill

Summer Family Sessions (Limited & Strategic)

Best Locations

• Lake Johnson Park

• Umstead State Park (dense shade)

• Eno River (select areas)

Avoid: Midday heat and crowded weekends

Summer sessions work best early morning or just before sunset.

📅 What Is the Best Time of Year for Family Photos in the Triangle?

• Best overall: Spring & Fall

• Best light: Golden hour year-round

• Best temperatures: April–May, October

Booking 2–3 months in advance is recommended, especially for fall.

🖤 A Documentary Approach to Family Photography

I don’t focus on stiff posing or forced smiles. My goal is to document your family as it is — the way you interact, move, and connect. Locations are chosen intentionally to support that approach, allowing moments to unfold naturally.

If you’re planning a family photo session in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or the surrounding Triangle area, I’d love to help you choose the right location and season for your family’s story.
